need to create a custom rendering format

Hi,
I am new to reporting service and I need to create a file of custom format except for thoese provided in RS,how to do it ? and I also want to put ths format in the dropdownlist in report manager , is there a way to do it?

Yes, it is possible to create a custom rendering extension for RS.
Looks in the RS Books Online for more info. However, the task is not
trivial and, depending on your format, may require a major programming
effort.

Need suggestion for reports software

Hi,

We have Visual Studio 2005 , Crystal Reports, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.

our Manager asked about the best and easiest reporting software other than Crystal Reports.

I didn't work with reports. Please assist me, if any one have idea.

I have worked with crystal reports and Sql Server Reporting Services and SSRS for all its problems, beats crystal and not just on price. The points with SSRS to watch are:

Choose the right style at the outset as difficult to change afterwards.|||

I tried Crystal it is expensive but has a lot of predefined functions that SSRS doesn't. But I elected to you SSRS I like it better it is easy to use and very flexible. I just wish it would conform to the same formats as excel. I found out you can not have over 160 in in viewable colum space width. Excel allows 256...

SQL Server 2005 license also.
In other way, SSRS 2005 database required to be on the SQL Server 2005 or it
can even be on SQL Server 2000 ?

run with SQL Server 2000. However, you will need a 2005 license.
RS is not purchased separately.

Need something faster than RS for programatic generation of reports...

I have been working on a program for quite some time that prints
invoices programatically with reporting services rs.render.
It was supposed to replace an old program that sent the invoices to a
dot matrix printer. This one sends to two very fast hp laserprinters.
Unfortunately, the rendering process of an EMF file in reporting
services is too slow (slower than the old program), so they have sent
me back to the drawing board to figure out another way to print to the
laser printers other than reporting services. Any one with a clue,
please let me know.

need some help

hi,
tried several issues to solve this ploblem.
i want to install reporting service but during the install ill get " Error
1920. Service 'ReportServer' (ReportServer) failed to start. Verify that
you have sufficient privileges to start system services."
But im a domain admin. doing this on a new machine it runs fine dooing this
with a differend account intead ot the NT Authority\NetworkService a
domina account lets say domain\sqlsrv then the service wil start.
but the problem what i have than is at the end of the installation it say
activate the install manualy this won't work overhere. tried anything.
anyone who has a good hint to solve this problem.
because the sql reporting won't instaal i can't install MOM 2005 reporting.

Need some advice..kinda urgent!

Ok...so I have installed sql 2005 with the whole nine yards along with it. I also have an installation of sql 2000 along with 2000 reporting services on a seperate server. Finally I also have about 100+ million rows I need to report on it and I need it to look as clean as possible. Regional/Category type of breakdown/drilldown Pivot charts, drop down filtering etc...maybe even some cool .net features..

Obvisouly a template for 2005 is the way to go...but whatever is going to get me up and running with a webbased reporting interface as soon as possible that will do what I need it to do is what I am looking for.

I am not to bad with getting solutions running in visual studio but plan to have my develoepr actually do the quieries...just looking for a point in teh right direction.

Do the nine yards include Analysis Services 2005, which may be useful in achieving acceptable and predictable query performance with 100+ million rows?

Also, what degree of interactivity is needed in the web-based reports - will the features of Reporting Services suffice, or do your users need full pivot capabilities such as swapping axes?

Also...can you explain to me more on OLAP? I understand and have built cubes in the past but never got into querying them....how does that work? I know it runs along side Reporting Services but I am just curious..100 million rows is only a start and need to know the BEST way to report on this amount of data.

When I try to connect through SQL Server Management Studio, the browser in the connect dialog can see the Reporting Services 2005 instance, but when I try to connect, I get an error dialog with the message, "The Report Services instance could not be found (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient)"

I manually setup ReportServer and ReportManageer virtual directories in IIS to point to the corresponding directories within the Reporting Services installation. Was I supposed to do this manually? Was the installer supposed to set this up?

Anyway, when I browse to http://localhost/ReportServer/ I get:

* The report server has encountered a configuration error. See the report server log files for more information. (rsServerConfigurationError)
o Access to the path 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.4\Reporting Services\ReportServer\RSReportServer.config' is denied.

When I browse to http://localhost/ReportManager/ I get:

RS 2005 comes with a Configuration Tool that creates the virtual directories, connects to the repository, updates the config files etc...

I still having this error and when I go to "Reporting Services Configuration" everything is OK with a green check, but the "Report Manager Virtua Directory" still appears with a Red X indicating that is "Not Configured", I push the New Button, and I get no errors in the "Task Status", it says the virtual directory was created and asigned, but the Red X is still there.

I later delete the vortual directory in the IIS Console and created, but is the same, I already tried changing the name os the virtual directory wne I press the new button, but nothing seems to work.

I've searched for this, but this is the only sites that appears.

Can you help me?

Look at "Report Server Virtual Directory" above the "Report Manager Virtual Directory". That's probably not configured which is why you have that red x. Set that up and the red 'x' will go away.

Well, this is not the problem. but I resolved, because I formatted the Laptop because I had another problems with my sound card and my wireless network card. Problem solved, but I have to reinstalled 3 times, because each time appears a diferent error. That happens when you use a free product, because I installed SQL Server 2005 and in the first installation of the report services everythig works fine.

for this line:

<ReportServerVirtualDirectory>?</ReportServerVirtualDirectory>

Is there no text where the ?'s are? If there is text, is it the correct name for the ReportServer virtual directory?

In my case, for some reason it was empty, there was no text where the ?'s are. When I filled in the text "ReportServer" (without the quotes) in that spot, then refreshed the browser-window that had the error "An error occurred while parsing the configuration file. The ReportServerVirtualDirectory element is missing.", the error went away and instead the normal Report Manager home web page showed up. In my case, no amount of playing with the configuration tool solved this, but this manual intervention did.

Under Web Service Identity, Select the Drop Down for Report Server and Report Manager and change the Default AppPool to RS.Net.0AppPool.

This corrected the errors I was having, hope this helps.

I am getting setup problems with Reporting Services 2005.

When I try to connect through SQL Server Management Studio, the browser in the connect dialog can see the Reporting Services 2005 instance, but when I try to connect, I get an error dialog with the message, "The Report Services instance could not be found (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient)"

I manually setup ReportServer and ReportManageer virtual directories in IIS to point to the corresponding directories within the Reporting Services installation. Was I supposed to do this manually? Was the installer supposed to set this up?

Anyway, when I browse to http://localhost/ReportServer/ I get:

* The report server has encountered a configuration error. See the report server log files for more information. (rsServerConfigurationError)
o Access to the path 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.4\Reporting Services\ReportServer\RSReportServer.config' is denied.

When I browse to http://localhost/ReportManager/ I get:

An error occurred while parsing the configuration file. The ReportServerVirtualDirectory element is missing.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong and what I can do to fix?

RS 2005 comes with a Configuration Tool that creates the virtual directories, connects to the repository, updates the config files etc...

Find it at Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 -> Configuration Tools -> Reporting Services Configuration

I still having this error and when I go to "Reporting Services Configuration" everything is OK with a green check, but the "Report Manager Virtua Directory" still appears with a Red X indicating that is "Not Configured", I push the New Button, and I get no errors in the "Task Status", it says the virtual directory was created and asigned, but the Red X is still there.

I later delete the vortual directory in the IIS Console and created, but is the same, I already tried changing the name os the virtual directory wne I press the new button, but nothing seems to work.

I've searched for this, but this is the only sites that appears.

Can you help me?

Well, this is not the problem. but I resolved, because I formatted the Laptop because I had another problems with my sound card and my wireless network card. Problem solved, but I have to reinstalled 3 times, because each time appears a diferent error. That happens when you use a free product, because I installed SQL Server 2005 and in the first installation of the report services everythig works fine.

for this line:

<ReportServerVirtualDirectory>?</ReportServerVirtualDirectory>

Is there no text where the ?'s are? If there is text, is it the correct name for the ReportServer virtual directory?

In my case, for some reason it was empty, there was no text where the ?'s are. When I filled in the text "ReportServer" (without the quotes) in that spot, then refreshed the browser-window that had the error "An error occurred while parsing the configuration file. The ReportServerVirtualDirectory element is missing.", the error went away and instead the normal Report Manager home web page showed up. In my case, no amount of playing with the configuration tool solved this, but this manual intervention did.

Under Web Service Identity, Select the Drop Down for Report Server and Report Manager and change the Default AppPool to RS.Net.0AppPool.

This corrected the errors I was having, hope this helps.

Need Reporing Server Options in VS 2005

I installed VS 2005 for one of our better users so he can start using VS 2005 for Report Designer. Because I'm a programmer, I installed Reporting Services with SQL 2005 so I automatically see the option in my VS 2005 to create a new Reporting Services project but he doesn't. What do I need to install to give him the Reporting Services Project options in VS 2005 ?

You need to install the client tools of SQL Server 2005, particularly the Business Intelligence Development Studio.

Need Opinions on creating a reporting database more efficiently

Situation:

SQL Server 2000.

At my new employer they have a production database on one server and a copy of it that is set to read only on another server which is used for reporting.

They have an SQL Server Agent job on the production server that: (2 times a day)

1. Backs up the production database
2. Copies the backup file to a directory on the reporting server. (Its pretty big and can take time if there are problems with the LAN)

They have an SQL Server Agent job on the Reporting server that: (scheduled to run 2 hours or so after the job on server 1 has run…they figured that it would be a safe bet that the backup and copy process of the first job would be done by then)

1. Breaks the user connections to the reporting database
2. Performs a restore on the reporting database using the backup file that was copied to the holding directory by the production job.
3. Sets some permissions for various users.
4. Sets the reporting database to READ ONLY.

What I would like to do is find a more efficient way to create this reporting database, I have started doing research into DTS methods but would like some opinions from more experienced users.

Need NT & SQL loginNames for Server & DB roles

I'm creating a SOX compliance report in Reporting Services 2000 via SQL
Server 2000. We will be upgrading in the next 3 months to 2005 on both, so I
need this question answered for both databases.
How do I pull permissions & fixed roles for all mapped NT accounts?
I can find the many of the names in Syslogins mapped to their default
databases, but it doesn't give me a list of ALL the dbs the Login has access
to. Also, when I go to <dbname>.dbo.SysUsers, it will give me the list of
people who specifically have access to that database, but not what DB roles
that might have.
What am I missing? I need a comprehensive list of these permissions on our
database.
The report format we're going with is:

<DatabaseName>
<ServerLogin> <Server or App Roles belonging to Login>
<Database logins>
<Database Roles>
<Table/View/SP/UDF permissions>

Need more info on integrated reporting controls

I am looking for more detail on these "integrated reporting controls" mentioned below (from http://www.microsoft.com/sql/2005/productinfo/top30features.asp#B):

"With SQL Server 2005, Reporting Services will provide report controls that will be shipped with Visual Studio 2005. Integrated reporting controls will provide improved reporting capabilities for enterprise applications".

Specifically, I am looking for more detail on these new ASP.NET 2005 controls that make dynamic server side reports generation via the Reporting Services Web Service easier.
