Need something faster than RS for programatic generation of reports...

I have been working on a program for quite some time that prints
invoices programatically with reporting services rs.render.
It was supposed to replace an old program that sent the invoices to a
dot matrix printer. This one sends to two very fast hp laserprinters.
Unfortunately, the rendering process of an EMF file in reporting
services is too slow (slower than the old program), so they have sent
me back to the drawing board to figure out another way to print to the
laser printers other than reporting services. Any one with a clue,
please let me know.
Thanks,
TrintAfter rendering the first page and therefore know the number of pages in the
report (StreamIDs.Length + 1 in VB) you could execute the render method in
separate threads for each of the remaining pages.
Also watch the MaxActiveReqForOneUser setting in your C:\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting
Services\ReportServer\RSReportServer.config file.
regards

Need some help with DTexec execution

Hi!

When i excute in the sql server this works fine

xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /f "D:\SSISProject\Integration Services Project1\ArchiveTicket.dtsx "'

but when i excute throught the C# code

jobCommand = new SqlCommand(@."xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /f "D:\SSISProject\Integration Services Project1\ArchiveTicket.dtsx"'", cconn);

It shows up red lines near the " and ' qoutes. I know that quotation marks are wrong but don't know how to solve it.

some help please

Thanks

jas

When C# compiler encounters the second quote symbol (right after /f) it thinks this is the end of the string. To indicate this is embedded quote inside the string, double it, otherwise C# has no way to determine your intentions:

jobCommand = new SqlCommand(@."xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /f ""D:\SSISProject\Integration Services Project1\ArchiveTicket.dtsx""' ", cconn);

|||

Thanks a Lot It worked

Jas

|||

one more guidance needed with regard to the Quotation marks

path = @."D:\SSISProject\Integration Services Project1\ArchiveTicket.dtsx";

jobCommand = new SqlCommand(@."xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /f "'path '" /Set \package.Variables[User::ArchiveFileType].Properties[Value];""Excel""'", cconn);

How Do i set the path's value in c# the quotation marks are wrong again. cos i want to set value of path according to selection in the UI.

Select("deviceUniqueId = '" + deviceUniqueId + "'"); is an e.g of Doing in C# but when i implement it through text it does not recognize

Thanks

Need some advice..kinda urgent!

Ok...so I have installed sql 2005 with the whole nine yards along with it. I also have an installation of sql 2000 along with 2000 reporting services on a seperate server. Finally I also have about 100+ million rows I need to report on it and I need it to look as clean as possible. Regional/Category type of breakdown/drilldown Pivot charts, drop down filtering etc...maybe even some cool .net features..

Obvisouly a template for 2005 is the way to go...but whatever is going to get me up and running with a webbased reporting interface as soon as possible that will do what I need it to do is what I am looking for.

I am not to bad with getting solutions running in visual studio but plan to have my develoepr actually do the quieries...just looking for a point in teh right direction.

Thanks in advance!

Michael404

Do the nine yards include Analysis Services 2005, which may be useful in achieving acceptable and predictable query performance with 100+ million rows?

Also, what degree of interactivity is needed in the web-based reports - will the features of Reporting Services suffice, or do your users need full pivot capabilities such as swapping axes?

|||

Thanks for the repy... Yes full reporting capabilities...

What do you mean about reporting servcies with full pivot capabilities...

I need drop downs for filtering and drill through capabilities wouldnt be bad either...however, I dont believe I understand the specifics on swapping axes?

Can you elaborate?

Thank you!!!

Michael

|||

Also...can you explain to me more on OLAP? I understand and have built cubes in the past but never got into querying them....how does that work? I know it runs along side Reporting Services but I am just curious..100 million rows is only a start and need to know the BEST way to report on this amount of data.

Thank you!

Michael

This analysis from OLAP Report describes the defining "FASMI" qualities and applications of OLAP technology - the site also has other info on OLAP:

http://www.olapreport.com/Applications.htm

>>

OLAP applications

OLAP technology can be used in a wide range of business applications

...

>>

|||For example, consider a pivot table, where the user can interactively drag dimensions and drop them on rows or columns, swap the dimensions on rows and columns, or "stack" additional dimensions on rows and columns. These features are usually associated with OLAP client tools.

Need Setup Help: "The ReportServerVirtualDirectory element is missing"

I am getting setup problems with Reporting Services 2005.

When I try to connect through SQL Server Management Studio, the browser in the connect dialog can see the Reporting Services 2005 instance, but when I try to connect, I get an error dialog with the message, "The Report Services instance could not be found (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient)"

I manually setup ReportServer and ReportManageer virtual directories in IIS to point to the corresponding directories within the Reporting Services installation. Was I supposed to do this manually? Was the installer supposed to set this up?

Anyway, when I browse to http://localhost/ReportServer/ I get:

* The report server has encountered a configuration error. See the report server log files for more information. (rsServerConfigurationError)
o Access to the path 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.4\Reporting Services\ReportServer\RSReportServer.config' is denied.

When I browse to http://localhost/ReportManager/ I get:

An error occurred while parsing the configuration file. The ReportServerVirtualDirectory element is missing.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong and what I can do to fix?

RS 2005 comes with a Configuration Tool that creates the virtual directories, connects to the repository, updates the config files etc...

Find it at Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 -> Configuration Tools -> Reporting Services Configuration

|||Bingo. That did it. Thanks Adam!
|||

Hi, can you help me with this?

I still having this error and when I go to "Reporting Services Configuration" everything is OK with a green check, but the "Report Manager Virtua Directory" still appears with a Red X indicating that is "Not Configured", I push the New Button, and I get no errors in the "Task Status", it says the virtual directory was created and asigned, but the Red X is still there.

I later delete the vortual directory in the IIS Console and created, but is the same, I already tried changing the name os the virtual directory wne I press the new button, but nothing seems to work.

I've searched for this, but this is the only sites that appears.

Can you help me?

If you need something like a screen shot, just mail me!

Thanks!

|||

hi Abasilis.

Look at "Report Server Virtual Directory" above the "Report Manager Virtual Directory". That's probably not configured which is why you have that red x. Set that up and the red 'x' will go away.

|||Yes, you are right. I have the same problem and it is fixed now. Thanks.|||

Well, this is not the problem. but I resolved, because I formatted the Laptop because I had another problems with my sound card and my wireless network card. Problem solved, but I have to reinstalled 3 times, because each time appears a diferent error. That happens when you use a free product, because I installed SQL Server 2005 and in the first installation of the report services everythig works fine.

Thanks anyway..

|||

Try looking in the file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\Reports\RSWebApplication.config"

for this line:

<ReportServerVirtualDirectory>?</ReportServerVirtualDirectory>

Is there no text where the ?'s are? If there is text, is it the correct name for the ReportServer virtual directory?

In my case, for some reason it was empty, there was no text where the ?'s are. When I filled in the text "ReportServer" (without the quotes) in that spot, then refreshed the browser-window that had the error "An error occurred while parsing the configuration file. The ReportServerVirtualDirectory element is missing.", the error went away and instead the normal Report Manager home web page showed up. In my case, no amount of playing with the configuration tool solved this, but this manual intervention did.

Good luck.

|||

DanaLive,

I had the same problem and added the text as you suggested to fix the problem.

I also noticed right above the virtual directory tag is a URL tag. Does anyone know if this should be set as well?

Code Snippet

<Configuration>
<UI>
<ReportServerUrl></ReportServerUrl>
<ReportServerVirtualDirectory>ReportServer</ReportServerVirtualDirectory>
<ReportBuilderTrustLevel>FullTrust</ReportBuilderTrustLevel>
</UI>

Thanks,

Johnny

|||Brilliant, thank you!|||This is just a pointer for the report manager to know where to look for the server, so if they're on different machines or of you are usiong HTTPS to secure the server you need to populate it, otherwise you shouldn't need to.|||

Thanks everyone for the information. However I still had a problem with getting Reporting Services to work. Here is what fixed it for me:

Under Web Service Identity, Select the Drop Down for Report Server and Report Manager and change the Default AppPool to RS.Net.0AppPool.

This corrected the errors I was having, hope this helps.

|||Changing the app pool has fixed the issue because it probably runs under a different identity to the original one i.e. an account that matches the rs service.|||

I'm also installing new and this fix also worked for me. Man I'm glad I found MSDN. I tried support.microsoft.com for this error and no luck.

I suspect this problem originally occurred because I did the Report Server Configuration and IIS was not running.

Thanks!

hi Abasilis.

Good luck.

|||

DanaLive,

I had the same problem and added the text as you suggested to fix the problem.

I also noticed right above the virtual directory tag is a URL tag. Does anyone know if this should be set as well?

Code Snippet

<Configuration>
<UI>
<ReportServerUrl></ReportServerUrl>
<ReportServerVirtualDirectory>ReportServer</ReportServerVirtualDirectory>
<ReportBuilderTrustLevel>FullTrust</ReportBuilderTrustLevel>
</UI>

Thanks,

Johnny

Need NT & SQL loginNames for Server & DB roles

I'm creating a SOX compliance report in Reporting Services 2000 via SQL
Server 2000. We will be upgrading in the next 3 months to 2005 on both, so I
need this question answered for both databases.
How do I pull permissions & fixed roles for all mapped NT accounts?
I can find the many of the names in Syslogins mapped to their default
databases, but it doesn't give me a list of ALL the dbs the Login has access
to. Also, when I go to <dbname>.dbo.SysUsers, it will give me the list of
people who specifically have access to that database, but not what DB roles
that might have.
What am I missing? I need a comprehensive list of these permissions on our
database.
The report format we're going with is:
<ServerName>
<DatabaseName>
<ServerLogin> <Server or App Roles belonging to Login>
<Database logins>
<Database Roles>
<Table/View/SP/UDF permissions>
Thanks for any suggestions or help anyone can give me on this!

Need list of known bugs when running SQL Server Reporting Services

Hi,
We are trying to document a list of known bugs when running SQL Server
Reporting Services on Windows 2000 server OS. If anyone can give us any
pointers on where we can get such a list please let us know.
mail me your reply at gaurav_maheshwari01@.infosys.com
Regards,
Gaurav MaheshwariI am not aware of a published list. Plus your request is pretty silly. Are
you talking RS 2000 or RS 2005. If RS 2000 with what service pack.

need help!!! how to fix pie slices in SQL Reporting Services?

would it be possible to have a uniform color for pie slices..
i mean if im going to made 3 charts with the same categories, it should have uniform color....

For example:
Chart1
+America -- Green
+Philippines -- Red
+India -- Blue
+Japan -- Pink

Chart2
+America -- Green
+Philippines -- Red
+India -- Blue
+Japan -- Pink

Chart3
+America -- Green
+Philippines -- Red
+India -- Blue
+Japan -- Pink

So then, how can i pick color for pie slices in Excel and SQL Reporting Services? I need it ASAP!!! Thanks in advance :)

Please check the following article and sample: http://blogs.msdn.com/bwelcker/archive/2005/05/20/420349.aspx

One part of the article describes how to define and use a custom color palette (this is what you are looking for). In your case, you would just make all the pie charts call the same function to get the color values.

Alternatively (but this is more work and less efficient), you could use an IIF function call on every datapoint to dynamically determine the colors. E.g. =iif(Fields!Region.Value = "America", "Green", iif(Fields!Region.Value = "India", "Blue", .... ))

-- Robert|||

How do i set the color of the datapoint in a pie chart.

Regards,

Karen

|||

I got that to work but i have one problem if my values contain

40%,30%, 30% the color repeats for the second 30% and 30% how can i get a different color for each of the 30%.

Any help will be appreciated.
