hello
installing sp1 requires the original cd? please tell me i don't... i really
don't want to shuffle tons of files around so i can extract a 600mb file
just to install a service pack.
man, i hate this about msft... i'm always digging up original cds for
updates. what a pain. what's the reason for this?

installing SP1. Windows installer has some quirks about it that can make
this a difficult goal to achieve. I have seen this issue happen when config
files are copied over top of existing config files. The modified dates and
create dates confuse the installer and make it think it needs to recreate
the file.
If you send me the setup log file I can see if this is an issue we can
resolve for our next service pack.

original cd? a nice cd burner takes care of that problem. a quick google
search gives you any cd key you need.

i'll email you the log file... maybe it'll help debug the install.
in the meantime, i've found a workaround... i dnloaded the eval install, and
used that instead. the original cd is on our corporate network, and i didn't
have access to it.

Need infos before installing SQL Express 2005 SP2
Hi,
I noticed that SP2 was finally released. A few question before I dive in that install:
- Must I uninstall anything before installing SP2?
- Considering that fact that I keep a copy of each install programs on a disk in case of crash recovery, must I keep SP1 files as well as SP2 files or can I consider that SP2 is complete by itself, that it completely overwrite SP1 and so delete SP1 files and just keep SP2 files for backup?
- If I also have Compact Edition installed, is there any SP2 issued for it?
- Is there a place where I can sign in so I can receive some sort of email notice where an upgrade is available for download for SQL Server 2005 as well as for Visual Studio 2005?

No, changes are commulative.

Only if you want to install your SQL Server from scratch and only want to roll up to SP1 after a crash, otherwise if you want to update the database to SP2 again, you′ll be fine just keeping the SP2 files.

No, the only changes convening the Compact edition is the support of Managment Studio to administer it.

Many thanks for the infos. Just to be sure I followed your explanation. If I have to recover/reinstall SQL Server Express SP2 following a crash, I just need my original Visual Studio disk and SQL Server SP2 files installed to get back to work?

I'm quite surprised to read that Windows update is supposed to notify me when any update to Visual Studio 2005 as well as SQL Server are available because not later that this morning, I tried it again following reception of your reply

and still didn't see any update available for those two items. Am I missing something?

I started applying "SQL server Express with advanced tools SP2" this morning and must admit that I'm not too sure about what I must understand from step "Existing components". I have three items:
- "SQL Server DataBase Services 9.1.2047.00"
=> which I can check
- "Reporting Services 9.1.2047.00"
=> which I can check
- Workstation components and development tools 9.1.2047.00
=> which is simply disabled?
If I then look at the details I can see the following warning:
Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools
Reason: Your upgrade is blocked. For more information about upgrade support, see the "Version and Edition Upgrades" and "Hardware and Software Requirements" topics in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online.
Edition check:
Your upgrade is blocked because of edition upgrade rules. For more information about edition upgrades, see the Version and Edition Upgrades topic in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online.
What would be the appropriate step to take?

All editions of SQL Server SP2 will be available on Microsoft Update later in March. There are a number of steps we have to take once we've completed a service pack to make it availabe on Microsoft Update. Rather than make you wait until we finish the Microsoft Update work to get the service pack, we release it to the web as soon as we're done and just accept that there is a slight delay before it's seen on MU. I'm not sure about the whether VS SP1 is on Microsoft Update or not.
Regarding the error you are seeing when you try to update the Workstation components, this seems to be a result of having tools from a different edition on your computer. Do you have an edition of SQL Server other than SQL Express on your computer? The tools are a common component, shared by all editions of SQL Server, although the higher level editions have more tools that SQL Express. If you've installed one of the other editions, the larger set of tools from that edition are installed on your computer. Since SQL Express has the smallest set of tools, SQL Express SP2 can not update the tools installed by other editions, you will need to apply the patch for the larger edition to get the tools updated.
If you're not sure if you have tools from another edition, you can check by going to Add/Remove Program, selecting the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 entry and clicking Change. Once the maintenance dialog opens, click the Report button to get a report showing not only the version of each component, but the source edition.

Looking at the results, everything seems to be normal. Only Express Edition, all same level which should be SP1. Am I missing something or maybe somewhere else I should check?

Need infos before installing SQL Express 2005 SP2
Hi,
I noticed that SP2 was finally released. A few question before I dive in that install:
- Must I uninstall anything before installing SP2?
- Considering that fact that I keep a copy of each install programs on a disk in case of crash recovery, must I keep SP1 files as well as SP2 files or can I consider that SP2 is complete by itself, that it completely overwrite SP1 and so delete SP1 files and just keep SP2 files for backup?
- If I also have Compact Edition installed, is there any SP2 issued for it?
- Is there a place where I can sign in so I can receive some sort of email notice where an upgrade is available for download for SQL Server 2005 as well as for Visual Studio 2005?

No, changes are commulative.

Only if you want to install your SQL Server from scratch and only want to roll up to SP1 after a crash, otherwise if you want to update the database to SP2 again, you′ll be fine just keeping the SP2 files.

No, the only changes convening the Compact edition is the support of Managment Studio to administer it.

Windows Update will inform you if new updates become available.

Many thanks for the infos. Just to be sure I followed your explanation. If I have to recover/reinstall SQL Server Express SP2 following a crash, I just need my original Visual Studio disk and SQL Server SP2 files installed to get back to work?

I'm quite surprised to read that Windows update is supposed to notify me when any update to Visual Studio 2005 as well as SQL Server are available because not later that this morning, I tried it again following reception of your reply
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=fr
and still didn't see any update available for those two items. Am I missing something?

I started applying "SQL server Express with advanced tools SP2" this morning and must admit that I'm not too sure about what I must understand from step "Existing components". I have three items:
- "SQL Server DataBase Services 9.1.2047.00"
=> which I can check
- "Reporting Services 9.1.2047.00"
=> which I can check
- Workstation components and development tools 9.1.2047.00
=> which is simply disabled?
If I then look at the details I can see the following warning:
Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools
Reason: Your upgrade is blocked. For more information about upgrade support, see the "Version and Edition Upgrades" and "Hardware and Software Requirements" topics in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online.
Edition check:
Your upgrade is blocked because of edition upgrade rules. For more information about edition upgrades, see the Version and Edition Upgrades topic in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online.
What would be the appropriate step to take?

|||Hi Stephane,
All editions of SQL Server SP2 will be available on Microsoft Update later in March. There are a number of steps we have to take once we've completed a service pack to make it availabe on Microsoft Update. Rather than make you wait until we finish the Microsoft Update work to get the service pack, we release it to the web as soon as we're done and just accept that there is a slight delay before it's seen on MU. I'm not sure about the whether VS SP1 is on Microsoft Update or not.
Regarding the error you are seeing when you try to update the Workstation components, this seems to be a result of having tools from a different edition on your computer. Do you have an edition of SQL Server other than SQL Express on your computer? The tools are a common component, shared by all editions of SQL Server, although the higher level editions have more tools that SQL Express. If you've installed one of the other editions, the larger set of tools from that edition are installed on your computer. Since SQL Express has the smallest set of tools, SQL Express SP2 can not update the tools installed by other editions, you will need to apply the patch for the larger edition to get the tools updated.
If you're not sure if you have tools from another edition, you can check by going to Add/Remove Program, selecting the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 entry and clicking Change. Once the maintenance dialog opens, click the Report button to get a report showing not only the version of each component, but the source edition.
