Need to Connect to SQL Server via TCP - Resources?

I need to create my own SQL Client and am looking for resources on the
protocol used to communicate to the Server via port 1433.
Any info would be helpful...
Thank you,
Scott<-Hi
SQL Server uses TDS (Tabular Data Stream). The on-the-wire protocol details
are available to 3rd party vendors, but there is no public documentation of
it.

Need to connect to SQL Server on other side of firewall, listening to a different port

Hi,
I want to communicate to SQL Server through my client. Server is listening
via port 16433 instead of defualt 1433.
And this particular server is on the other side of the firewall and it is in
a workgroup. Client Server is in a domain.
I have tried specifying ServerName,PortNo. but it does not work.
Any one know some other way to communicate to this server. Please help.
Thanks
PushkarCan you show us a connection string?

Does the name MyServer resolve on your system? Names must be resolved to IP
addresses (or MAC addresses) using some mechanism, NetBIOS broadcasts, DNS,
WINS -- something. Try pinging it. If you have no reason to believe the
name will resolve, you have no expectation of connectivity with SQL Server.
If you have no mechanism for resolving the name, use the IP address of the
SQL box in place of the name.
Also, are you on the inside of the firewall, or the outside? If you are on
the outside, that port must have been opened by the admin of the firewall.
If you are on the inside, the firewall is *most*likely* not a significant
factor (though that is not exclusively true, a capable firewall can be
configured to block traffic in either direction, it just isn't usually done
that way.)

Go to the Client Network Utility and create an alias to SQL Server that is
listening 16433 port
Make sure that TCPIP is at begining of the list.

Need table of words/glossary/etc.

Hi!

I have a client who wants to have a function to have a system create a validation system for users who register for a system. It would email them a registration code, which they want to be two or three random words strewn together.

So, I'm looking for a big table of words - random, glossary terms, etc. Does anyone have anything like this? (A flat file that I can import would be fine.)

Thanks!I have a dictionary of words in an access db,... by why would you do this, why not generate some random sequence based on something like the data/time they subscribed??|||I have a dictionary of words in an access db,... by why would you do this, why not generate some random sequence based on something like the data/time they subscribed??

Because that would be logical and clients don't operate on logic :)

(They're afraid that random words would be too difficult for the users of the system, most of which are senior citizens.)|||A smart person would suggest sending them a validation link in the email that they can click and autovalidates... but there you go. ;)

So do you want this db? I think it is about 4 megs but I can't be sure...|||This is completely out of my hands. I've made my arguments and I've been shot down. Other people have offered alternatives, they've shot them down too. So, this is what I have to go with.

If you could provide the table, that'd be great.

Thanks!|||how do you want it? http download from somewhere? I can upload it in the next few hours (once I get home).|||Either post it somewhere or email it to rflagg@.gmail.com

Thanks!|||should be in your gmail|||Thanks! That table is great (and very extensive). Much appreciated!|||...sounds like a "lazy hacker" looking for a quick and dirty dictionary attack...maybe wrong though ;)|||And I just helped him,.. great,... ah well, if that is the case then people should protect themselves against such attacks anyway...|||I'm in a similar situation. Could you possible send me a copy of the db ?

[My Email] (laasunde@.online.no)

Thank you.|||Any way you can prove to me that it's not for dictionary attacks?|||Don't know how I could prove that over the Internet.

Need the db for an assignment at uni..|||I promise you that's not what it's for. I'm a professional, I do ASP.NET and SQL development for a living as full-time work, as contracts on the side, and I maintain two websites that I wrote myself for two non-profit animal rescue groups dedicated to the saving and placement of homeless and stray animals. One of which is Animal Allies (http://www.animalallies.com) which services the Washington D.C. metro area (where I live). If you'd like more evidence of this, you can email me at tarkon@.animalallies.com and I'll respond.

Besides that, there's very little I can do to assure you this is for honest and legitimate purposes other than my personal guarantee (and the fact that I don't even know what a dictionary attack is).

And lastly, it's been my experience most hackers are Linux people and not SQL Server 2000 developers.|||heheh no worries Tarkon, I wasn't that concerned to be honest,... just messing with your head. ;)sql

Need some help with a Triggers (FOR INSERT)

Hi there

I' d like to make a trigger which will come with some kind of message ( maybe jscript?) or printout, each time

I insert new client into the Client table. Clent table has ClientID, ClientName, Address, EMail, and ContactPerson.

Please help

M.D.

If you would like to send e-mail you can use dbmail, I think that Java script will not work inside SQL trigger, and remember that trigger should work as short as possible, because control will be returned to caller after trigger finish. The best will be to insert record to special table or mark record as to notify and run Job on SQL Job Agent to check records in the table periodically and send reports or print them. Insider job you can do more stuff like run SSIS package, call application and more

Thanks

Need some assistance linking an Oracle database

I'm trying to set up an Oracle database as a linked server in SQL server 7 but having some problems.

The client software is installed and seems to be working fine (Used access to link some tables). I set the product name to Oracle 8.1 and the Datasource to the system dns name. I left provider string, location and catalog blank. Under the security tab I had it set to map to the oracle account and also tried the impersonate option, but always got the same error.

Error: 7399 OLE DB provider 'MSDASQL' reported an error. Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed]
ORA-12640: Authentication Adapter initialization failed]

This is my first time trying to set up and Oracle database as a linked server, any help is appreciated.Made a few changes and now getting the following error.

"Error 7399: OLE DB provider 'MSDAORA' reported an error"

I get this error when trying to view the list of tables under the linked server in enterprise manager. When i run a basic query through query analyzer, i get this expanded error message.

"OLE/DB provider returned message: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name"

Using Oracle ODBC Test utility in the Oracle client I am able to connect to the database and run queries.|||The most common problem in using Linked Server and other distributed services is SQL Server Agent did not have Network permissions which means your SQL Server is installed with the Microsoft provided local systems account, I maybe wrong but I think in 7.0 you may have to reinstall SQL Server with a Service account. You may not find the info about service account in SQL Server 7.0 BOL(books Online) because it took a while to get Microsoft to require the Service account. Hope This helps.

Kind regards,
Gift Peddie|||The error I would get is the following. "OLE/DB provider returned message: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name".

I haven't been able to find a good step by step guide to follow to link to an Oracle database. Trying to reinstall the server might not be an option. If I could find something that did say it was the problem you mentioned, then it would probably be worth it.

Can anyone shed some light on this problem. Or managed to link to an oracle databse from SQL?|||Try these two urls, the first has most known SQL Server Errors and the solutions complined over the years by Neil Pikes and the second is one of the best Oracle info site on the Web including Oracle BOL(Books online). Hope this helps.

Need Help, DTS is Running extremely Slow!

Hi guys.

I have a DTS package ON SQL 2000 which transfer data from AS400 to SQL 2000 using an ODBC Client Access 5.1 (The DSN was configured by a sysdmin on the AS400 so it is configured properly).
When i execute the package manualy (by right click and "execute package") the package runns fine and ruterns data in no time (Eproximatly 30000 rows in 15 sec).

The problem starts when a job executes the same packagee!!!
When i start the job, the DTS package is running Very Very Slow!!!!
sometime it takes Hours to return a few rows! and it seems that it is stuck.

The SQLAgent is running as a NT Account with Administrator rights, and has full access to the AS400!! so the problem is not the Agent.

by monitoring the AS400, i have noticed that the job/DTS is retreaving the first fetch quickly , and then it is in a waiting status

i have tried everything and cant seem to get this problem fixed

Does anyone know what could be the problem?
I Need Help Quick!!!
Thank You

GilTo maximize CPU resources, you can define a CPU idle condition for SQL Server Agent. SQL Server Agent uses the CPU idle condition setting to determine the most advantageous time to execute jobs.

For example, you can schedule a daily backup job to occur during CPU idle time and slow production periods.

Before you define jobs to execute during CPU idle time, determine how much CPU the job requires. You can use SQL Server Profiler or Windows NT Performance Monitor to monitor server traffic and collect statistics. You can use the information you gather to set the CPU idle time percentage.

Define the CPU idle condition as a percentage below which the average CPU usage must remain for a specified time. Next, set the amount of time. When this time has been exceeded, SQL Server Agent starts all jobs that have a CPU idle time schedule.

But test it before deploying on production.|||Thnx for replying Satya,

I am afraid this ahs nothing to do with CPU resources. Even when i start the job manualy when there is no activity at all an the server the DTS runs Very Very Slow.

I am prety sure that there is somthing else to be done , allthow i will try your advise.

Any suggestions?|||The are a number of thing you can do. It's specific to your job. First of all who has control. AS400 or the database(SQL). I don't know of a DTS package in AS400. So start there, next, you might want to look at the parameters manually vs job. Are there any environmental issues to look at. Such as: numbers of records to commit, indexes, maintenance and backups, buffers size, Look it up on books online SQL Server.|||AS400?

You mean DB2, no?

Have the DB2 dba set up an unload then copy the data to your box...

Then bcp the data in

I know that doesn't address your problem...

What's the execution step in the job look like?

One difference in your methods is the context of which ID is being used.

When you execute it from EM, it's under the context of your id, AND your location.

From the job, it's under the context of the agent AND the server drive mappings..

I'm guessing it's a network issue...

Did the job ever finish?|||Thnx alll 4 replying,

But i am afriad that that is not the problem...

I think i have solved it though...

The Client Access has an option to translate data by a DLL.
it was using one...dont know its name.

removing this dll solved the problem and the job is executing fine now.

thank you all for helping

Gil
